Song of the Day Thing #28

Rate this Entry

This song, like most of Hail to the Thief, took a little while to grow on me. Now that I do like it, though, I think it's quite interesting. It has a really cool sense of escalating energy as the music progresses, and especially the weird, creepy thing a little bit after the line "This is the Gloaming". I actually only started appreciating this song after seeing it played in The Basement, and I still think the live version is just as good as the studio version.

Also I guess I'm doing the album ranking thing for all the albums now.

Spoiler:
1. There There
2. A Wolf at the Door
3. Myxomatosis
4. 2+2=5
5. Backdrifts
6. The Gloaming
7. Where I End And You Begin
8. Go To Sleep
9. Scatterbrain
10. Sail to the Moon (everyone seems to really like this song but it's not as impressive to me; although I used to say that about Let Down and now I really love that song too)
11. I Will
12. A Punch-Up At a Wedding
13. Sit Down, Stand Up
14. We Suck Young Blood (I actually kinda still like the song though)

I'd say this is their weakest album. Doesn't mean I don't like it, just means it didn't stick with me as much as the others. Have to agree with your top 3 :3

I can see that. I think Pablo Honey is their weakest personally but this doesn't rank super-high. The Radiohead members apparently wished they'd spent more time on this album too.

Have you heard of Thom's alternate version of the album? It makes the album flow a lot better but it also cuts out Backdrifts which I really like. Still an interesting experience though. It goes:

    1. There There
    2. The Gloaming
    3. Sail to the Moon
    4. Sit Down, Stand Up
    5. Go to Sleep
    6. Where I End and You Begin
    7. Scatterbrain
    8. 2+2=5
    9. Myxomatosis
    10. A Wolf at the Door

I forgot about Pablo Honey for a minute there. xP Yeah, I like this one more.

I'll check that out, seems interesting

This album is probably on the bottom half, but I'd at least put it over Pablo Honey and King of Limbs. Amnesiac is debatable. It has a few songs I absolutely adore but there are a lot of songs that probably could be better to some extent, The Gloaming is one of those. I probably wouldn't rate The Gloaming as high but it's still a good song.

Might as well post muh rankings for this album while I'm at it :3

    Spoiler:
    1. There, There (idk if you've ever seen my top 10 favorite songs list but this was on there so this probably doesn't come as much of a surprise xP)
    2. 2+2=5
    3. A Wolf At the Door
    4. Where I End and You Begin
    5. Myxomatosis
    6. Backdrifts (Great lyrically, but while it is growing on me musically, it's not "great" musically or anything.
    7. Sit Down. Stand Up. (One of the first HTTT songs I got into, it has fallen from grace a bit. But I still love that freakout at the end I won't lie. I just love the musical freakouts Radiohead does in general honestly, it's one of the main reasons why Morning Bell is probably my favorite Kid A song.)
    8. A Punch-Up At a Wedding
    9. Go to Sleep
    10. Sail to the Moon (It's been growing on me, but still)
    11. The Gloaming
    12. We Suck Young Blood (I like the little piano freakout towards the end, and I like the creepiness of it :3 admittedly, it does drag on a bit)
    13. I Will
    14. Scatterbrain

Sail to the Moon tends to get a really high approval rating from most of the people I talk to, so it's interesting to see someone else who isn't a huge fan.

There There on the other hand seems to top people's lists more often than not. It is a great song though.

I personally would rank this album just above Pablo Honey.
