Song of the Day Thing #56

Rate this Entry

Oh boy. I've been saving The King of Limbs for last, both because it's the most recent album, and because... it's my favorite.

Yep, I'm the weird guy out who has this one at the top. Kid A and OK Computer both give it HEAVY competition at some points, but at the moment it stays on top. I think it's partially because of how the music helped me through a rough time, and I have a sentimental connection to it as a result. My only gripe is that it's too short, but I guess quality over quantity or something.

As for this song, it's probably among the most haunting Radiohead have put out (although Spectre is giving it a run for its money). I almost can't listen to this song without hearing Give Up the Ghost immediately after, because I just think they complement each other so well. To me, the triple threat of Lotus Flower - Codex - Give Up the Ghost is the best segment in Radiohead's discography. Not the most popular of opinions, I suppose.

Spoiler:
1. Bloom
2. Codex
3. Lotus Flower
4. Give Up the Ghost
5. Little By Little
6. Morning Mr. Magpie
7. Feral
8. Separator

Also just for the record, my album ranking goes TKOL>Kid A>OK Computer>In Rainbows>The Bends>Amnesiac>HTTT>Pablo Honey. Kid A and OKC swap places sometimes, though.

Well, King of Limbs is certainly not my personal favorite but that's probably just because I haven't really listened to it as much as the other albums sans Pablo Honey. My bias against songs or bands that aren't directly played with "real instruments" or whatever has been reduced significantly, but I still generally prefer less electronic music. Then again, I rate Kid A pretty highly but I quite frankly like it better than TKOL at the moment.

In Rainbows (which is the one I personally have the most emotional attachment to)>OK Computer>Kid A>The Bends>HTTT>Amnesiac>TKOL>Pablo Honey

as far as this album's ranking

    Spoiler:
    1. Codex
    2. Give Up the Ghost
    3. Bloom
    4. Lotus Flower
    5. Morning Mr. Magpie
    6. Little By Little
    7. Separator
    8. Feral

Though honestly, only the first and last choices are concrete for me. The rest are on about the same level for me.

I listened to all of these during a fine period so yeah, no emotional attachment here.

In Rainbows > OK Computer > King of Limbs > Kid A > Amnesiac > The Bends >
Hail to the Thief > Pablo Honey

    Spoiler:

    8. Feral
    7. Mr Magpie
    6. Give Up the Ghost
    5. Lotus Flower
    4. Bloom
    3. Little By Little
    2. Codex
    1. Separator

    And I have no idea how Feral can be better than Separator for anyone ;n;

Feral is actually my favorite instrumental song from Radiohead, except maybe for Meeting in the Aisle.

I haven't listened to Seperator as much as anything else from the album (the original version of the album I listened to omitted it) so it's just not got as much attachment behind it for me. I do still like it a lot, and it could easily have ended up much higher on another album.

For whatever reason, instrumentals are usually the worst part of the album for me in, like, anything. I don't know if that's unpopular. :P

    But yeah, Separator is like, one of my favorites ever. ;n;
Did you listen to it on Youtube btw? For whatever reason, it's not on there :P

Feral is probably one of the better studio album instrumentals they've done but honestly that's not a very high bar like, at all. I don't mind instrumentals on principle, I listen to Sigur Ros and since I don't bother looking up translated lyrics it's basically just like listening to an instrumental. But... honestly Radiohead's instrumentals don't compare to Sigur Ros so you knowwwwwwwwwww

Yeah, I heard TKOL on YouTube originally so I missed out on Separator. I do own it now, it just hasn't had much time to settle in I guess?

Yeah, I agree Radiohead's instrumentals usually aren't up to par... I do like Feral a lot though. It just sounds so chaotic. I almost feel like vocals would kinda spoil the song I guess? I always picture a wolf or something in that song.

I mean, I couldn't imagine Feral with lyrics, but I couldn't imagine Hunting Bears or Treefingers with lyrics either xP
