The Problems With Our Current Form of Education

Rate this Entry
Call this the 95 Theses because I'll be calling out the thing we (almost) all dread: Our Schools.

1. Education is something we need to want to do, not something we need to have to do. We like VSauce and Crash Course and SciShow so much because it's something that we want to do, not something we have to do. Granted there probably will be those times where Crash Course and SciShow videos are your homework, but I'm not talking about in school I'm talking about our own free time. Whenever you see Crash Course for example you don't go "Ugh, I have to watch Crash Course again," more than likely you go "Oooh, Crash Course! What's this episode on?"

2. The things we learn in school don't peak our interest. Now I've gone through this before and I'll go through it again after I make this point. It's always the homework in your least favorite class that you hate doing. Rarely do people who love art and art class go "Ugh, art homework!" And there are those times where you love a subject but the homework is boring and uninteresting. Now onto the point I talked about in the first sentence and before. The reason why school teaches you things you don't want to learn about is for YOUR own benefit. There are thousands of people around the country that change their academic interests within their school year, I'll bet on it. I did too! I was originally interested in astronomy, but then I grew to liking psychology and philosophy. Now let's take that scenario for a spin. Because I already enlisted myself in Astronomy 1, I can't change my course in the middle of the year, so I have to wait until next year to take Psychology 1. So I just added a year in which otherwise I would've been learning about both. Even when you're 100% certain that you want to do A when you're in school, public school can't cater to you personally, it has to cater to everyone, so it must offer A, B, C, all the way to Y. Z got cut out because the school didn't have the budget.

3. The teachers. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of awesome teachers out there who do a wonderful job. That being said, all it takes is one teacher to ruin your entire experience in school. That teacher who isn't a teacher but makes the text book the teacher. The teacher that just gives you packet after packet and says that they were the ones that did a good job. That is no teacher, that is a paper-giver-outer...? Back to my uninteresting point, it's these teachers that also make you not like school because they don't engage us in the subject, they don't TEACH the subject. They make us memorize the subject instead of actually learning it. And it's a true shame that I saw the day that "memorize" and "learn" are synonyms. A true disgrace.

4. The Industrial Complex. That isn't a real complex (however if it is, look it up for yourself). The school system has a great interest in our date of manufacture rather than our academic level. Instead of putting people in classrooms based on our academic capabilities, they put us in classrooms based upon our birth. You never hear about "The Class of History" or "The Class of Mathematics" you always see "Class of 2013" or "Class of 1999" or whatever. As much as I understand why they do this (money) it really puts harm in our academic career. With one teacher for every 30+ students, the teacher doesn't have time to sit down with every student and help them. People who are (I mean no offense) slower in academic capability are being left behind by the teacher, and those who are faster or advanced in academic capability are way ahead of the teacher and are losing interest because they can't move along at their own pace. This really does affect how people learn and what people learn. There needs to be some way to fix this.

5. The other students. Now again, don't get me wrong, schools are one of the most greatest places to meet people with the same interests, the same hobbies, and to get new and more friends. However it's also the most recognizable places where you meet bullies. When you think of bully, I'm pretty sure you think of a school environment. Now I got in an interesting discussion with my mom and step-dad about bullies. And I agree with both sides. People need to learn how to deal with bullies. You can't expect people to stop just because you tell them to, because that's not how the world works. You need to learn how to deal with effectively. That being said, there's no excuse for bullies. Bullies do need to stop bullying and stop being jerks for no reason.

6. Grading and our future. Schools help shape what our future is going to be like. Generally if you get high grades, you end up in a better future. Generally if you get bad grades, you end up in a worse future. But the tension and stress with grading. Our futures lie within our and the school's hands. We should study for those tests, I agree. But there's a giant wall of stress when it comes to school. To think our own future depends on what we do within the span of about 12 years is mind blowing. It's stressful to say the least. We feel pressured and boxed in, as we usually feel when we're stressed. You should do your best in school. But the stress and pressure the school puts on you and how much weight the school has on your entire life makes some people feel helpless, making them do worse.

7. Lack of trust. I, fortunately, am in an environment where I can trust the teachers and staff to help me whenever I feel troubled, and hopefully you guys are in that environment too. However not everyone feels like they can trust their teachers and staff. In different societies and clicks, different things are considered acceptable and unacceptable. If you do something that is considered unacceptable, the teachers and staff might look at you funny and start to look down on you, let alone the students who definitely do that (teenage devils). The student needs to feel that they can trust their teachers and mentors because their future lies within their hands as well. If someone needs helps, they should feel secure and should trust their teachers. The teachers should not act on bias and should (to their best ability) remain unbiased. Because as soon as that trust is broken, it's all downhill from there.

So I lacked 88 of the 95 Theses, I got 7 of them, that's good, right? Anyways I do want to help educate you guys. If there's anything that you feel I should do to help you guys learn, please let me know And as always, don't forget to be awesome.
