Well, have I got an uplifting song for the all of two people that read this today :3
jk it's about suicide. But yeah... Blind Melon, this is a band that exists. You know, I have a decent collection of albums from the 90s but I don't have all that many from bands that only put out music in the 90s or were undeniably at their height in the 90s. I mean, I like Radiohead's 90s stuff obviously but there aren't THAT many people arguing they went to complete shit after OK Computer. I also like Modest Mouse's 90s stuff but their later stuff is good too for the most part, and the peak of their popularity was in the 2000s (I think). But Blind Melon? Well, the lead singer kind of sort of OD'd so you know how that goes... rip Shannon Hoon :c Most people will probably only remember them for "No Rain" or just never know about them at all, but for what little they've put out before Shannon Hoon well, you know, it was some pretty good stuff. Not the best band ever or anything but it was damn good 90s alternative rock. T
Now for this song specifically, I can't really have separate paragraphs for the music and the lyrics or anything, because honestly the music and the lyrics are VERY intertwined in this case. It's probably the main reason why I love this song. The first part of the song is essentially the guy reflecting on life and all of that, and the music's relatively calm but not necessarily completely peaceful. And then suddenly "sitting at the edge of this building, 20 stories belowwwwww" and shit gets real both musically and in the context of the song. I just love this part, it really captures the anxiety and the intensity of what such a moment would likely be like. And then, after what could only be described as musical suicide, the person musically goes to the afterlife. I find the "three armed man" line particularly interesting, actually. It most likely represents a man who's so seemingly exceptional in every way and so beyond his own capabilities that he practically has three arms, or at least, that's my interpretation of it after reading through songmeanings.com like a year ago. Apparently this song was based off of the lead singer's own experience of seeing some woman jump to her death, and I think this song just really captures all of the emotions of that pretty well. Apparently nobody had any idea why she jumped even after the fact, so there's some extrapolation of the reasoning but hey, it works. Just a great song all around really. Like the Detroit song earlier, you probably wouldn't realize how depressing it was without knowing the lyrics, but once you do the music suddenly starts to fit depressingly well.
