Song a Day or whatever #34

I'm in a spiritual mood today, so wynaut a song about Jesus?

... oh wait.

So yeah, Green Day, they're a band that exists. I remember back in 6th grade where my then best buddy (who I don't talk to at all any more so rip that) and I basically constantly argued over who the best band ever was between Weezer and Green Day. At the time I only had like 6 of Weezer's songs but still called them my favorite band any way but that's besides the point. I remember him bringing up this song to me before and how it's like super long since it's like 9 minutes. *stares at Impossible Soul* ... oh you naive fool. But you know, that was literally like 5 years before I listened to THAT one so y'know. Either way, I've heard plenty of Green Day on the radio but I never felt particularly compelled to get an album by them. They're kind of samey sounding, I think Billy Joe Armstrong's voice isn't really that interesting, yada yada yada. But somehow I ended up getting this album. Wait why?

Well, it was almost exactly a year ago (holy shit it was almost exactly a year ago fuck) and it was on that special day known as Earth Day where we celebrate the planet or whatever the fuck. And we were in science class or whatever the fuck and our teacher probably said something along the lines of "hey does anybody know what day it is?" and one kid was like "oh yeah it's green day!" And I was like, "hue that's a band that exists." And then I was thinking about Green Day after that and I was looking through the iTunes store on my phone and I saw that American Idiot was on sale for 5 dollars so I thought, "why the hell not?"

... And now I have this album.

I'm almost always a sucker for those long ass songs that consist of a bunch of distinctive parts adding up to a whole. Whether it be Paranoid Android, The Island, Impossible Soul, The Shrine/An Argument (perhaps some of you readers might not know that one) or this shit I certainly enjoy songs that do that kind of thing. This song sets itself apart with that enjoyable grandiosity that none of those other songs I mentioned really have. I probably enjoy all of those songs I listed more overall, but this song is certainly enjoyable in its own way.

Never been a huge Green Day fan either, but they do have some songs I can listen to and enjoy. I had a bad experience with them at band camp, when my roommate had insomnia and played them all night, keeping me up as well, but I can get over that nowadays. Let me see how I feel about this song...

The intro is pretty good. I was worried that the song would be too repetitive to keep my attention for nine minutes, but it seems to have a good amount of variety, enough to keep me interested in it. I can't ever understand Armstrong's voice so I'm kinda lost as to what this song is about... Actually, the vocals in this song seem to have a similar cadence to Summer of 69 by Bryan Adams. That's interesting, now I can't unhear that. At about 5 minutes in now, the song is still holding my attention which is a good sign. The variety in music is just enough, but I can still tell it's the same song - quite nice. Aaaand right after typing that we enter a soft piano section. I think it fits though. From what little lyrics I can make out this song sounds like it's about the flaws of modern life, or someone who just takes advantage of everything he can in today's landscape. I think I heard a line about marijuana in there, anyway.

Yeah, probably one of the better Green Day songs I've listened to.
