How to Debate/Argue

Rate this Entry
Are you sounding like a complete jerk whenever you argue? Having trouble getting your thoughts out clearly? Do you just want to know how to at least be taken seriously in an argument? These tips may just help you!

1. Be sure to organize your thoughts.
This can be tricky considering you're thinking on the fly. But one way to organize your thoughts is to focus on the topic you want to talk about and just make small points in your head that you can expand upon later. If you're having an argument on whether apples or oranges taste better just take a small note in your head of how sweet the apple tastes, then expand from there.

2. Be sure to articulate, pronounce, and speak your words clearly.
Nothing's worse than listening to someone speak and not even being able to know what they're saying. Of course sometimes it can be a bit difficult, such with names, places, or just simply words you haven't seen before. Just be sure to pronounce words as clearly as possible. Just basic speaking tips is all you really need to practice.

3. Don't interrupt.
I have to admit, I do this too. I realize I need to stop, and it's important you do. You'll be seen as rude, disrespectful, and all those nasty stuff that's associated with interrupting. When you enter any discussion, you always silently agree to the rule that you'll give the other person the light of day to let them explain their point, and vice versa.

4. No disrespect.
Once you disrespect the other person, it'll just turn into a fight. If you don't want it to turn into a fight, you don't want to disrespect the other person, or their ideals.

5. Remain on topic.
When you go off of topic, it's not gonna remain clear what the discussion is about, and will make it seem like you're trying to change the subject onto something else because you can't argue the original point anymore.

Just remember these 5 tips, and you should be okay!
