There will be a backup incase some things don't carry over.
Always a chance that something might get lost though.

If you have a link to the topic, I can restore it.
Basically what I need is the topic id #, which is inside a link to the topic.

Heres a link to a topic: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=12625
The topic id # is 12625
so what I do is I duplicate the database, do a search for topic id # 12625, copy the topic, posts, and attachments associated with it, and I export it from the copy database and import it to the live database.

So if you have important topics, and you want to play it safe, go to the 1st page of your topic, copy the link to it, and save it in a file on your computer.

I believe you can do the same thing with private messages.

The vBulletin layout is very similar to phpBB anyway... so don't start freaking out.

Also, to answer your question Batman, we can still have a chat.

Here is an example of what I mean for "tags" since I really can't explain it unless showing you guys.

Under the username, there will be a usertitle, and then a little tag indication that shows what group you are in. I'm not even exactly sure that this kind of system will be implemented in the latest version of vBulletin but I'm going to stay certain.

We don't need groups anymore in the first place if you ask me, they've just turned into a shit storm. But if you really want to keep them that bad the tag is good enough.

I asked Dion how this update would improve my forum experience, he said less bugs and more profile customization. That's cool and all, but a lot of it seems like change for the sake of change rather than improvement, for example, the arcade and name colors, etc. I support the update for fixing bugs, but the rest of it, I do not.

It sounds like we're losing more than we're gaining.

It would appear so.
