Intern Moderator ELECTIONS!

Yup, that's how this is going to be decided.

Until Friday (whenever I get home), the former intern moderators can post here about what they managed to accomplish as intern moderators, and why they should be a permanent mod. I trust you guys not to go out of hand, but obviously, anything that breaks a rule is not allowed here. While constructive criticism of other interns is allowed, the focus should be on selling yourself.

On Friday, the "debate" portion of this will be over, and the voting will begin. Staff and members alike (obviously not the former interns) can send me 1-3 people they believe deserve to be a permanent moderator out of the 4. To prevent biased voting, you must type up a reason for why you are voting for the person you are voting for.

Whenever I decide to end the voting, the two interns who received the most votes will be promoted to permanent mods. Good luck to all!

Well, first of all, thank you again to all of the mods who decided to take me on as one of the first intern mods. If anybody has any questions they would like to directly ask me, just tell me somewhere and I will answer it in here.

Well, I was quick to get on the job as moderator, within the first 24 hours having completely updated the name change list, and regularly updating it when a new name change took place, showing how quick I am to get to my duties and how I sustain them. And, I will admit, I made a couple of mistakes, such as deleting a spambot's thread and asking the next mod online to delete the actual account in the chat, instead of in the mod tower. However, I can attest that I have learnt from my mistakes and will not make them again. As can be seen in the mod log, early on I was able to point out that a new member had links in his sig that made him out to be an ad bot, getting Polar to delete his account before it could cause any sort of havoc on the forum, earning me brownie points, according to Polar.

This is all without mentioning my forum presence, how I'm almost always online, constantly partaking in threads, and always offering my opinion and advice when asked. All in all, I'm just your friendly neighborhood Englishman who wants the best for the forum. Don't let the brownie points go to waste! Vote Ranger!

I will now take any questions you may have, and I would like to preemptively thank each and every one of you who even considers to choose me.

Out of this great learning experience, one thing has stood out to me above all else: the Mods allowed me to be an Intern, even with my past transgressions, and I am very grateful for that. As for why I feel I would make a great permanent Mod:

Much like Ranger, I took the updating of the OP in the name change thread upon myself. I would edit it after every few name changes, but of course Adonis did so when he got the chance as well so I can't take all of the credit. Still, I was consistent in doing so when it fell upon me.

I also feel that I have brought about a couple of key changes/edits. Yes, the moving of Royales from Forum Games to Forum Fan Fictions was originally my suggestion, but the majority of the Mods also agreed with it as well. Please don't see that as a change made solely on my own without consulting the others. Either way, I believe the change was much needed. Even though Royales have been treated as games for a long while, that doesn't change the fact that they aren't games. The only one participating in them is the original creator, apart from the beginning where everyone can choose a fighter and sometimes arenas. Note that this does not mean I find them any less enjoyable than forum games; I really do love them and I'm happy to be a part of them.

In addition, I also created a Master Thread for some of the games that some of us enjoy playing together on this forum that can be played on other sites. I'll admit, the list needs to be updated as I just discovered the joys of Town of Salem and Jackbox. Another change I made, albeit a minor one, is that along with your cake day, you can also now have a special name change on your birthday.

Finally, I have been a very active forum member, and some of you can attest that I am on during "odd hours." For example, I moved all of the Royales from Forum Games to Forum Fan Fictions during the middle of the night. Time is not a restraint for me.

This is my reasoning for why I should be a permanent Mod. I take charge when I need to, but I never do anything without consulting the Mods, plus I'm around for a large portion of the day and some times after midnight. Really though, I'm happy to have had this opportunity in the first place. Thank you.

The obvious thing to say in this scenario would be to increase activity, which, to be brutally honest, is probably not something I can do on my own. What can I do for the benefit of the forum, however? Well, besides from be an early morning moderator, I can honestly say that I'm not sure what I can do on my own. That's not to say I can't do anything, though, and this is the key point: The moderators are a team. While they all have individual powers and they get on well enough with them, when they are unsure how to use their powers they confer. When a rule is brought up they discuss it's implications and it's limitations in order to come up with the best possible solution. If another decision is made, be it moving the Battle Royales to a different section or something much more major, I can guarantee you I will give my all to come up with the best solution and to help in any way I can, on and off the forum.

@Monokuma what is, in your opinion, more important as a mod? Being active and friendly, or being just and looking to always change the forum?

Well, I honestly had a rather mundane stint as an intern. (Oh by the way thanks for the opportunity to even do it gaiz.) However, with what time I did spend, I did things on the repertoire of being a permanent one. I updated the (Dead at the time.) much in need of updating OP of the REWF thread, and problem solved (Thanks Pol.) when the character limit meant we battled too much on this here site. I found a spambot and, as put by a former mod who had found a bot after leaving the position, "headbutted my keyboard and pretended to do something" until the permamods logged on and checked the mod tower. I also took the time to review the rules (Admittedly upon realizing my knowledge of how the bumping rule the mods seem fond of ridding of worked.) to make sure I used my Great power to fulfill my responsibilities to my fullest ability.

Of course, I should be fair to myself and the other interns and admit I did little to change the status quo for the better. (Unless you count incidentally re-sparking the necrobump rule discussion to a limited point by being unsure of whether something violated it, and whether to enforce it.) Honestly, the changing of the status quo was little done by me and my fellow intern in that month, Ranger. However, what we didn't do to seek out improvable flaws in the architecture of this forum, (Hue wordplay)
I'd say we did just as well by in being vigilantly observant when we were on, (Ranger's cookies aren't mine to see, nor are we often on for great lengths simultaneously, but Ranger's ubiquity in the various sections, and the fact that I make sure I've manually read every section, thread, and new blog until the forum is left void of content new to me, seems quite vigilant to me.) and we never hesitated to deliberate with our superiors in going about tasks more strenuous than updating OP's.

So, basically, while I wasn't myself the chief reason we made some big improvement to the way we organized topics and threads or made a really useful one of either, I did keep the same what I felt the most useful of my qualities to be a good mod; vigilance and communication.

I can end this early if everyone's done.

- As a newer member, what is something key that I should know, from the four of you, that shows why you would make a great moderator? This could range from past experiences on the forum, to personality traits that would give you the edge over your opposition.

- As someone who has been a moderator on other forums, I've seen people come on, get put up for Modship, and utterly tank after being promoted, since the "Hard part" of the process was already over, and they had the position. As a newer set of eyes, what can you tell me to convince me that you wouldn't do the same?

- If you get promoted to full Moderator, what will be your key focus on the forum, that sets you apart from the rest of the staff? What sort of projects or focal points have you set your sights on?

- In your own words, tell me what an "Great Moderator" is. What type of characteristics must they posses? Do you truly believe you fulfill this description?

- If you were in the position of our current Mods, who had to pick two of you to promote, what two Interns would you put up for permanent Modship, and why? (This can include yourself)

Clarification: Ranger requested I specify what I meant by "tanked". Basically, they got the promotion, and that was it. They came on, occasionally, but didn't really do anything Mod-related. In their eyes, they got the position they wanted, so that was all they had to do. Tanked = Got the position, but didn't do anything at all.

1) Well, I think you already know this, but the sheer amount of time I spend on this forum is one edge I have, especially in the early hours of the morning when all of the American mods are sleeping, or at least usually are. Besides from that, I do constantly learn from my mistakes, and while I think the others would say the same, I can promise you that if I do something wrong, I will try my hardest to make sure it never happens again.

2) Well, I don't think me or Gunnut, having not been mods on here before, can give a certain answer to that without peering into the future. But my activity didn't change at all during the intern month, so I'm certain it will stay the same if I were to become a full mod.

3) This is the same question that Turtle asked me, but I'll abridge it: I personally don't have any bright ideas to change the forum as we know it, however should someone come up with a brilliant idea or the rest of the mods agree on it, I will do all I can to see it achieved. Oh, and I will pay particular attention to new members to make sure they get a good welcome and settle right in, or if they turn out to be a spam bot to ban them before any major havoc can be caused. Maybe I'll get a ban before Loh did, relative to our times as mods.

4) Well, ideally a great mod would be one who is an embodiment of the rules, to first and foremost be friendly and active, but at the same time making sure that the rules are being upheld, without personal biases coming into it. A bit of a short answer, but that's pretty much it.

5) Butters, certainly. He has undeniably done the most out of all of us, has previous modding experience on the forum, is rather active, and has already moved a whole genre of thread to another sub forum. As for the other one...I honestly couldn't say.

The second thing I did, was push for a donation and incentive program. Myself and some of the mods came to a basic agreement on prizes based on donation amount, in fact the only piece missing to the puzzle was how to get the money to Rob, and how to make sure people would get their incentives promptly, without us giving rewards to those who lied about donating. (This is an issue primarily because Rob isnt around enough to confirm that the donations went through)

I wanted to help, I still do, I constantly come up with Ideas, and I want to contribute them to this website, and to help that to become a reality, I had to make my intern modship look more impressive. I camped out in the name change thread, waiting for people to change names that way I could post in the mod logs. Now of course there's nothing wrong with that, I just wanted to say something about it. I still did regular mod things when I was needed, such as deleting B.S.B's gamertags from the thread within a few minutes of his initial request.

With the wave of activity that's bound to come once ERB makes it's return, you need me as a moderator here, and I think that shows in my internship and this whole manifesto itself. The fact that I went from banned to intern, proves that i've matured. My intern modship proves that I wasnt lying about my application, and that I would be a great full time moderator. So please, vote for me to be a permanent mod, because even though it sounds cliche, I want to help make this forum the best it can be.

To be completely honest, that can shift, but there's no doubt that they are both very important. Being active and friendly is important because it's just what you're supposed to do as a decent human being, but I feel for some people such as myself, being friendly comes naturally, and without a doubt all of the permanent Mods and the Intern Mods have been very active.

As for being just and looking to always change the forum, that's also important when it comes to keeping the forum well grounded. However, there's going to be times when nothing on the forum needs to be changed, and if you try to enforce a bunch of changes (no matter how well your intentions are) you're going to create more problems than you're fixing.

So I'd say that both of those attributes do have their "time to shine," but they are both definitely important.

@Noctis:

1. I have been a Moderator on this forum in the past (albeit a sectional mod, not a Super Mod), and I am extremely active. I believe Ranger could attest that there are many times when I'm also around well into the night when the other "American mods" are asleep. My father is also a politician, working as both an established committee member in my town and state representative of my state, and as such I've learned a lot from him in the ways of leading and communication.

2. I've been a member of this forum for nearly 4 years (it'll be 4 on February 21), and as such I wouldn't just abandon the forum. There are definitely things I'd like to do in improving this forum and I've really grown to love a lot of the members here. Especially members I've known since the beginning (Mooncat, Spars) and even some of the newer ones (Klonoa, Turtle). I always have a great time on this forum which is why logging on has always been a part of my daily routine.

3. Key focus? I can't answer that for sure, but I do tend to have an emphasis on organization and community. You've seen examples of the former when I relocated the Royales, and examples of the latter when I created the Master Thread for the games we enjoy playing. I'll definitely try and make sure that those games never die out. I've also been working on a new points system for the forum, I'm just trying to restructure it so it's a bit better than the idea I have now.

4. In my eyes, a "great moderator" possesses a little bit of every virtue (patience, kindness, loyalty, commitment, etc.). But they shouldn't be a machine that seems to be displaying these virtues as a way of "moving up in the world," I think there does have to a sense of genuineness behind them. Nobody is perfect, though, is why I don't see a truly great moderator ever existing. Like the old cliche goes, nobody's perfect.

5. I'd definitely go for ranger, and not just because he's my friend. As he said, he does fulfill a unique niche, being able to be on at times the rest of us usually aren't. Plus out of the four of us, he's easily the most friendly and easygoing. I've never seen him have a single problem on the forum.

I have been here since 2013, definitely not much compared to others, particularly those I co-interned with, but I've been here long enough to see the transition period from PHPBB (The old forum software we used.) to the current vBulletin; to see groups removed permanently and almost literally buried in the Graveyard named after them; to see members new and old banned, re-banned, made offender, so on, so forth, some people I'd at one point have seen banning me, if anything, they were that well behaved. This is all to say that I, despite being a newer member in a sense separate your own meaning of it, I've seen all sorts of stuff change and go away in my time here, and with each iteration of the forum, (Including the short time when I first joined where we basically had no rules.) it was as if I got to experience joining right from the get-go on a new ERB forum every time. With each change, I had to learn new rules, unspoken or otherwise; new systems to manipulate within the forum; (Say, figuring out how to get the quick-reply box to display formatting options at all.) and, though the giant clique that was ERBoH remained more or less the same all throughout, each change, big or small, brought some calamity that was, no matter how involved I got, proved a learning experience in some way or another. In short, what I lack in posts or years since I registered here, I'd say I make up for in the fact I'm receptive enough to have learned so much in my time here, and gone through a lot of maturing and change, largely with the forum to thank. The forum's taught me a lot more in the way I interact with people and systems, electronic or written, than I'd have ever thought to come from a website dedicated to the likes of Hitler and Stalin rap battling. And what better place to put that experience to use, than the place that granted me the opportunity to have that experience?

As I sort of went into in my first post here, I think me (And really all of the interns) were selected for the trial runs in part, and did good at our given tasks especially, because we didn't become more active in order to show just how mod-like we were. I, for one, am rather vigilant about checking every posted-in thread (Sans spoilers I'm attempting to avoid.) as soon as time permits, (Normally when I wake up in the morning, when I get home from school, and then occasionally refreshing the main page and opening a tab in every unread sub-forum.) to clear out the unread posts. I'm also on Skype about as often as I'm online here, meaning even if I'm slow to refresh a page and see something that demands me attention, someone can summon me via Skype chat. Just by my nature, about as often as I'm near enough this PC to keep an eye on what's happening online, I will be checking it. I wouldn't just leave after being given mod status because it would bother my penchant for having read everything to not at least keep open the ERBoH.com tab I have open all the time, to at least to see if something happens.

I'd like to make some sort of hyperlinked references for the sections, such as Forum Games (Less crucial in my eyes.), Writers Corner or FMERBoH's, where there are many similar but unique threads and series that ought to be accessible for people who want to view them after they're buried upon being ended, or perhaps just want to browse dank some Forum Fictions or Original Stories. It'd be a small, perhaps gratuitous task, but still useful for the sake of time-saving. On a similar note, perhaps stickied guides for how the most archetypal forum games and forum fics, TDFE, RPGs, Battle Royales, are usually set up and carried out. Again, maybe we don't need reference guides for things which aren't rap battle disses, but why not attempt to make the most seminal content here more accessible for new guys? Besides the more gratuitous stuff, I'd like to fill the gap there seems to be in our current spam defenses. That's to say, at a certain time of day, there's often a small but crucial wait before a Super Mod or Admin can find spambot posts, or reports of them. If it's a bot anything like our friends John Goopy, it can prove quite bothersome having the spambot spreading its advert seed/asexually reproducing in order to maximize the impact, as it were. Another forum I go onto has moderators that seem to all be in the same region of the US/Canada, rendering the forum helpless against recurring sieges of absolutely nonsensical spam about football games and what have you, or, as I became a personal target of after angering a future double-accounter here, PM'ing people gore porn or something equally awful. I don't believe we've any current moderators that are West of the Central Time zone. Often there aren't even any moderators online by time I go to bed on weekdays. So, besides attempting to organize some content for ease of access, I would like to contribute to our team of moderators by supplementing their hold on the reins when they're asleep on the Eastern half of the carriage, so to speak.

- In your own words, tell me what an "Great Moderator" is. What type of characteristics must they posses? Do you truly believe you fulfill this description? A Great mod is active, for sure. They can't do their job if they're offline all the time. They also need to be thorough. Logging on solely to check into chat for a second, or to read a ERBoH Speculation/Discussion thread (Or, like, something they aren't the mod in charge of overseeing.) and nothing else, ain't exactly a good show of their ability to moderate. Communication with other mods, members themselves, and the Rules Thread if necessary are all crucial as well. If a misunderstanding of a situation makes a mod think a rule's been broken, they should probably make sure to at least see if the mother mods concur on the decision first, and make sure to explain the steps they're taking, and ensure that those steps are logical. (Totally not paraphrasing Sam. :p) I'm not perfect, but I do feel like I at least embody all of these traits, and did practice them while in my internship, to at worst be a *pretty good* moderator.

- If you were in the position of our current Mods, who had to pick two of you to promote, what two Interns would you put up for permanent Modship, and why? (This can include yourself) While I don't want to pick favorites, or to toot my own horn too much, I'd have to say that Ranger and I would, as Monokuma put it, fulfill a niche; being on at time many other aren't. It's 1 AM in the Eastern Time zone, where a large number of our current mods are at least in close proximity to, by time it's 10 PM here. Ranger is a good 5 hours ahead of the Eastern Time Zone, meaning that by 1 AM EST, it's 6 AM there, which means he's sure to be on, which he often is, while many people in the states, and many mods, are likely asleep. That's not to say that time-spent-awake's not the only aspect of a forumer to consider for this position, but I see us four as about equally capable of our task. The matter of when we do it could just mean simpler moderation tasks get done in handier time.

unfortunately, bring in power comes with dealing with troublemakers. Should someone challenge your authority on this forum, what will you do? How will you react?

@Intern Mods how would you have handled the Saiya/Hana situation?

@Klonoa They're entitled to their opinion, just as long as they don't break any of the set rules doing so.

Everything. From admitting to lying to Wumbo blackmailing to Hana deleting her account. It's a complicated matter and I'm curious how all the intern mods would solve it

Well, I do not know everything, or possibly even that much, about this scenario. Heck, this is the first time I've heard about Wumbo blackmailing her. Well, I don't believe she was explicitly impersonating someone else, so unless she revealed it/lied with the intention of creating drama, which I don't think was the case, there isn't anything in the rules about it. On that front we'd just have to help her sort everything out to the best of our abilities. If she was impersonating someone, though, further action would have to be taken, with said action being decided in the mod tower, as despite it being explicitly against the rules, it does not say how many infraction points to give out or how long to ban the offender.

As to the blackmailing, while there isn't anything in the rules saying 'no blackmailing', we can all agree it's a serious offence. If proper proof was supplied, I would start a discussion in the mod tower to see exactly how we should treat the case.

A member is seen committing an offense (Posting "Light Porn", dildos, as suggested by Turtle.)

How would you approach the member, and handle the situation, if the member was:


- A regular, well known member
- A new member, fresh off their first week on the forum
- A recently unbanned member
- A fellow Moderator

Regular: Give out the infraction points, delete the thread/post, do what else needs to be done should he reach one of the stages of infraction points.

Newbie: Instinctively, I was going to say just a warning, but then I realised that posting that sort of material is one of the common grounds on things that forums ban, with the exception of those based around subjects which include such materials. So, if it was right now, I would seek an older mod for guidence, but if none were online I would probably deal out the points and delete the post. But thank you, if I do become a mod that will be the first thing I ask, so I know if such a situation arises I can take the correct course of action.

Redemption: Well, I'm assuming it's a guy on redemption. If this is the case, then I'm not sure on how the mods insist it's handled, but it will result in the member being banned again, due to violating the terms of redemption.

Mod: Rules are rules, and they should know them. I would do the same as with a regular member.

It's not different from any other situation. If they're simply expressing an opinion, you can't fault them for that. But if they're breaking rules while doing so (i.e. revealing personal information, being verbally abusive, etc.) then you should take action as it's disruptive to the community as a whole.

I'll admit I wasn't actively around during the incident, so I only have what others have said to go off of, but here's how I would've handled it:

Saiya did nothing wrong forum-wise, so there's nothing we could have done or should have done there. She was taking the background, problems, etc. of someone not on or associated with the forum. While theoretically it could have started drama, that wasn't her intention. She was blackmailed, and any of the "drama" would have stemmed from the reaction of the other forumers.

As for Wumbo, he has no excuse. Blackmailing is wrong no matter which way you cut it. He broke the rule that states "no harassing members," and this was the biggest way he could have done so. A permaban was justified, especially after his gore-posting.

A regular, well known member- Three infraction points; they've been on long enough and they should know the rules by now.

A new member, fresh off their first week on the forum- I'd personally give them two infraction points with a stern warning and link them to the rules thread. Two infraction points being because yes, they are new, but they still should have had the common sense not to post a dildo.

A recently unbanned member- Talk it over with the Mods and consider rebanning them for a week, then allow one final chance, but with extra scrutiny. Any mishaps, even lesser ones would be grounds for another permaban.

A fellow Moderator- Definitely give them the three point infraction; as a Moderator they should know the rules more than anyone else and they shouldn't consider themselves above the rules.

Please answer this question as differently as you can from each other's answer. I don't want to see the same answer over and over.

I'd say it's the same difference between a professor and a student.

At one time, a professor was a student; similarly, at one point a Mod was an active member. Both the former student and former active member had two things going on for them that helped:

1. They both took the right steps to become a professor/Mod. They had professors and Mods of their own who they learned from, and they both somehow proved that they were capable of becoming equal to their superiors.

2. They had the desire to help others. The professor gained an interest in teaching, and desired to pass their knowledge onto future students. Similarly, Mods are both trusted members of a community and they desire to help keep their community united and enjoyable.

So, in the end, just as a professor is a former student who developed the rights skills and the desire to help others who were once in a similar situation to himself, Mods are former members who have proven their worth and have a mindset in which they want to help foster growth in their community as best as they can.

To explain outside of the whole student-professor/active member-Mod analogy, basically:

An active member is a part of the community, and while they may want the best for the community they either aren't as prepared to be a Mod, or they're content where they are and don't have aspirations of becoming a Mod.

Whereas a Mod is an active member of the community who is not only there to enjoy themselves with others, they are also there to make sure it is a pleasant experience for everyone involved and they have shown that they have the qualifications necessary to becoming a mod (as I've stated in a previous answer, I believe those to be common virtues: kindness, patience, responsiveness, etc.).

I think it's the case where, ideally, not all active members are moderators, but all moderators are active members. I say that because how do we define active members? As members of this forum who are online daily, who are actively partaking in the threads of this forum, possibly creating their own, and, all in all, being a part of the community that we have here. I'm not saying that inactive members can't be a part of the community, merely that active members can tend to come to the forefront of it, due to often being the ones you see when logging on. They are role models to newer members, giving a template on how to act and not break the rules. We also expect members to help in the upholding of the forum's rules in the ways they can, by following them and reporting the posts that don't, either directly to an online mod or by using the report button.

What do we expect of moderators? Exactly the same, with the only exception being the very last point: The reporting of the rule breaking. They are the ones who take action on these claims, make sure they're legitimate, and then follow through with the correct course of action. While yes, they can confer with other mods if they are uncertain as to how to proceed, for the majority of cases they are able and expected to follow a certain course of action, especially with such common cases as spam bots and the clearer rules such as the porn posting ones. The only other thing that differs from our expectations of moderators and active members, possibly, is the role model stipulation, solely due to moderators being (possibly) held in higher regard with new members, due to their position, meaning a greater burden is put on them to behave well, not that you'd really expect anything less from someone who upholds the rules. Can there be a mod that isn't active? Well, theoretically yes, it is still possible for them to only come on occasionally and fulfill their duties, however this does greatly limit their effectiveness, as for a large amount of the time they reduce the mod staff by one, potentially increasing the time window in which there's no mod online and those who join with malicious intent can strike.

The way I look at it, assuming the activity is on about the same level for the hypothetical moderator, it comes down to the experience and attitude a good moderator should have. A member can play all of the forum games, speculate on every ERB, sign up for every forum fiction, chat basically whenever they're on, and even be on the lookout for --or just happen across-- rule-violating stuff, (Like that time I just sort of found a triple account while looking through the members list.) but all of this is stuff a newbie that made sure to look over the rules can do to some degree. A moderator is (Hopefully) someone who's given everyone else, particularly the moderators, a reason to trust that they aren't very liable to be breaking the rules anytime soon, and know well enough when a rule's been broken; that they won't just leave the moment they are promoted from "member"; that they care enough about this site and the community hosted by it to contribute to the continued civility and order on it. So, a member can be active, and even contribute in ways to facilitate good moderation by the staff, a moderator is a member who is (Hopefully) active, has earned the trust of members and mods alike through continued good behavior, and shown just how much they care for this community by their participation and desire for modship, enough to be made one by their fellow members/mods.
