[center:3gkza5vx]“The hero is one who kindles a great light in the world, who sets up blazing torches in the dark streets of life for men to see by.” - Felix Adler, 1851 - 1933
Chapter 1
The Beginning of the End[/center:3gkza5vx]
"Is the camera on? Is it? Okay... This is Wendy Danvers broadcasting live in the heart of Serene City! We're bringing you live footage of another battle between good and evil! Our city's own group of Young Heroes are protecting the city from a man who goes by the name of Nitrus-" The Anchorwoman was cut off as a gust of wind shot by from behind her. Except it wasn't any ordinary gust of wind.
"Sorry about that, ma'am!" The man shouted as he continued sprinting on. The world around him seemed motionless as he ran with incredible speed. The street-filled pedestrians were still like mannequins, the vehicles on the road crawled like snails and the birds above appeared like hanging ordainments on a sky painted ceiling. He was always bewildered every time he looked around at the still framed world he was moving along in.
He snapped back into reality when a crackling noise echoed in his ear canal, "Richie, you're supposed to be making sure the citizens are safe from harm, not running them over!"
The man slowly came to a halt for a small moment to recollect his train of thought. The world came back to life around him as he managed to catch his breath, "Calm down, Serenity. I've been running away from life since I was five! And you're supposed to use our code names, not our real names! I'm Jet, remember? You always know how to take the fun out of everything," He smiled at his own remarks and started sprinting again, "So tell me, what exactly are we dealing with? I haven't seen this whack job before."
Serenity was sitting on a black leather chair in front of various monitors ranging from different sizes. He was dressed up in golden armour that encased his entire body, from head to toe. On his back, he wore a blood red cape with the word "SERENITY" woven in golden thread along the top. He watched as the screens shifted from footage to image and beyond. Once he found what he was looking for, he held his hand up to his cheek, "The guy's name is Bartholomew Stryker. He's a fugitive from across the waters. He goes by the alias of Nitrus, he's able to manipulate the particles in the air into balls of unstable energy and direct them at will. I doubt this guy cares about what happens to the people around him so stay alert and keep all civilians away from the conflict."
"Don't worry, golden boy, I'll have this son of a b*tch wrapped up like a tortilla before you could order one from Taco Bell!" A deep, raspy voice gaffled into his earpiece.
"Listen, Mark, this isn't the type of guy that would go down so easily. Don't get cocky and keep the city damage to a minimum!" Serenity warned the voice.
"Oh come on, Goldilocks! You're not my mother, so please call me Maximum!" The voice replied.
Maximum was charging down the street at Nitrus. Compared to this 10 foot tall brute, Nitrus was a firecracker. Before Maximum could break the fugitive in half, Nitrus materialized a ball of energy the size of a mini-van and hurled it towards him. The ball of energy exploded on contact with Maximum and sent him flying back. He landed face first into the asphalt, "Damn that piece of-"
"Don't tell me Goliath has finally met his David." A feminine voice joked in Maximum's earpiece.
"Ha ha ha, very funny, Dragonfly," Maximum replied in in a sarcastic tone. He got up and began brushing off from his suit. "I'm just getting warmed up, princess. Gotta find out his weaknesses."
"I didn't think that also involved getting blasted across downtown." Dragonfly chided. She was flying around the streets making sure no civilians were near the brawl. Her insect-like wings sparkled in the bright sun. As they flapped, it almost looked as if a faint rainbow was lifting her off the ground. She looked back to see Maximum charging at Nitrus again in the distance. But sure enough, Nitrus hurled another ball of energy, which exploded on contact and sent him flying backwards into a taxi.
"Gunner! I could use some back up!" Maximum grunted as he lifted himself out of the huge dent he left in the taxi, "This bastard has a lot more bite than I thought."
"I thought you'd never ask." Gunner smirked as he appeared from behind an alley. His dark skin and grim stature made him look like a military general. He held up his right arm with his left and the colored skin lifted up like panels. Mechanical hums and clicks tinkered about until a cannon formed all the way up to his elbow. His entire forearm was metallic and glowed light blue. With little effort, Gunner began firing beams of light blue energy from his arm at Nitrus. The energy blasted Nitrus off his feet and into a city trash can. Crumpled paper and old food remains scattered in the air, "Yo, Dee, are all the people outta the way yet?" Gunner asked into his earpiece.
"Just about," Dragonfly responded, "It'd be a lot easier if you two would keep the fight in one specific part of the city. Half of the last block was blown to bits already."
"It's a lot harder with a glorified giant and an explosive fugitive having a pissing contest." Gunner joked. Nitrus was soon back up on his feet brushing a banana peel off of his shoulder. He scowled at Gunner and began to create another giant ball of energy. But before he could launch it at the cyborg, Maximum slammed into him from behind. The ball was launched into a different direction. Right where it was going to land, a man in a business suit was paralyzed in fear, screaming his head off. Luckily, Jet ran in and grabbed onto the man before the ball of energy collided with the earth before them. The explosion made a crater in the ground, both Jet and the man stood just feet away from the wreckage, "Maximum, you thick-headed ass! Watch what you're doing! We're supposed to keeping these people safe, not blasting them into oblivion!" Jet yelled.
Maximum looked up and noticed the business looking man was cursing at Jet for some odd reason, "Well just be glad that I finally got this guy pinned down!" Maximum shouted back while struggling to keep Nitrus down on the ground.
"G-Get... off of... me...!" Nitrus grunted at Maximum. Soon, Nirtus was glowing bright yellow as he was emanating energy around his entire body. A big explosion sent Maximum flying into the air. Luckily Dragonfly swooped in and caught him before he hit the ground, "All I wanted was to be left alone!" Nitrus shouted as he began tossing orbs of energy at Gunner.
"Well, you came to the wrong place to have a vacation." Gunner said, firing beams of energy into the orbs. The orbs exploded on contact with the beams. Before Nitrus could through another ball of energy, Jet cut in and gave him a hard right hook to the jaw. The impact was enough to send him tumbling down the street. As soon as Nitrus got back onto his feet, Jet was there once again to greet him with his fists.
"Had enough yet?" Jet bantered as he gave a flurry of punches to Nitrus's chest. The last hit sent Nitrus back a few feet.
"Leave... me... alone!" Nitrus yelled as his body began to glow. Just as Jet was inches away from landing another hit, Nitrus released the energy which knocked Jet right into a street lamp.
"I've had enough of this." Maximum grunted while charging at Nitrus. Before Nitrus could react again, Maximum picked the man up and began spinning like a top, "Wanna be left alone? Go somewhere else!"
After he said that, Maximum let go of the deviant, launching him out towards the sea. The man's cry slowly faded away as he ascended out into the distance. Maximum lifted up his arms in a victorious pose, and people began to cheer and praise the Young Heroes.
Out in the sea, a body crashed into the tame waves and slowly descended deeper into the depths of the dark blue vastness. Nitrus cursed to himself, unable to move his body due to the harsh impact. ”I just wanted to be left alone…” He thought to himself as his vision began to blur. His body sank deeper into the darkness, when slowly; a faint glow began to shimmer.
In the next few moments, the lives inside of Serene City will never be the same.
